Two questions:

Suggestions for attractive, comfortable, waterproof boots? My high boots (I got them my freshman year of college) just failed for the second time this winter, leaking water while I was tromping around shoveling. (They've been waterproofed twice since November, so that's not it either.) They're ugly as all hell, but they worked for five years.

Suggestions for cheap fabric buying? Is there a fabric equivalent to KnitPicks and Elann?

This is completely random, but I found a knee-high pair of leather boots from Frye in the T.K. Maxx here in Leeds. They're plain and pull-on, olive green leather. I paid 25 pounds when apparently they'd originally been at least a couple hundred. Anyway, they keep out the damp/slush/snow like nobody's business! I haven't had to waterproof them yet, but probably should...

Cheap Fabric Buying: I don't know if yall have Joann's Fabrics up there but they have good sales sometimes. Also, oddly enough depending on what you're looking for Walmart has cheap as hell fabric but only certain one's have a fabric section worth a crap. Those are pretty much the only options that I have around here.

Occasionally I get lucky and Goodwill or thrift stores will have fabric but that's hit and miss.

The only waterproof boots I fund are worth anything are la canadienne. Notdstroms carries the line. They are fairly expensive but worth it IMHO.

Re boots: When I was working at a horseback riding camp in the middle of nowhere I wore Blundstones. They're fashionable in a cowboy sort of way. Don't know how winterised they are but they're easy to pull on, comfortable with thick socks (after broken in), are suitable for riding due to the (very slight) heel, and can pretty much take anything.

I have the (unisex brand) Magnums. They need a go-over with waterproofing spray up the tongue before wearing, but they're hard-wearing as hell. I've had this pair for a year, my boyfriend's pair is starting to get a bit knackered after three.

I got a pair of rubber nearly-knee highs with a furry/cotton-y lining on the interior from Land's End when I moved to Boston and they have been fantastic for snow and rain. Also? They are only 30 bucks.
