The tote bag which has gone with me everywhere for almost two years is starting to tear. While I do love my tote and it has served me well and, even better, it was free (thank you, Lumos, by the way, for giving me a free tote bag), I don't quite feel like wandering around with a hole-filled bag. It seems to defeat the idea of carrying a bag if stuff falls out of it.

However, this means I am looking for a new tote. I do, of course, have a college tote bag, but that - by some irony - is too small to carry my class books/notebooks/knitting and my pens always fall to the bottom. However, as I got my Lumos bag free because I was geeky enough to go to a Harry Potter convention and my mini tote at the college bookstore, I have no idea where to look online for a quality bag. (I tend to accidentally come by my good bags like that. I have a kick ass leather lap top bag that I inherited from my father after he started living at home with us again [rather than commuting on a weekly rather than daily basis] and I've had my back pack since I was... 10? 11? something like that.) I have a student budget, of course, and want to get the most for my money. Advise me, please! Where do you get your bags?

... Someday when I have time and money (i.e. within the first year of retirement, so at least forty four years from now), I think I will knit my own tote bag, like this. However, I have not time, nor money, nor a washing machine that lends itself to felting, and certainly not the time to needle felt an entire tote bag. So, alas, I believe that is out. When I am an old lady with sheep and tea and too many cats and no children, I will have pretty handmade bags. Until then, I will deal with being a cheap consumer.

Lots of charities/nonprofits give away really nice canvas totes with donations, but these are basic ones with no inner pockets and no clasps, but they are frequently good looking and help a non-profit. I loved my Sierra Club tote for many a year.

This is not-pink looks nice- http://sierraclub.usptgear.com/Product.asp?ID=sclbmap

this site, ecobags has a ton of bags at a number of levels of price and function and style. I like this one.

Thank you for the links!

And I have been drooling over the doctor's bag since the pattern came out. It's a simple knit... I just can't bring myself to spend the money on the yarn (even though it's not exactly expensive yarn).
