Silencing Christians

I'm linking this in my journal not because I agree with the hate speech being spewed forth from this website. Civil right are now "special rights" (afforded only to straight white men? I'm not sure). My sexuality now not only threatens perfect strangers' marriages and children, but now their very religion.

"If we don't speak up and get involved, we're aiding and abetting the destruction of Christianity."

" [Queer activists try]... to gain acceptance from the skeptical public, using three basic techniques of propaganda: desensitizing, jamming, and conversion."

I stopped the video there because I need to paint orchids today, not be in a rage. However, people will listen to this hate speech and consume it wholesale. I know, I live with some of these people.

So I did a simple thing (after pausing the video that's not just hateful toward the queer community, but toward all minorities - "special rights" my ass). I filled out their survey - saying that yes, I believe that all people should have equal rights. Homosexuals should be allowed to adopt children. (Am I "homosexual" in their eyes? I'm not sure.) Hate crimes should have severe punishments.

Their language is forceful and hateful ("Is the secular media demonstrating a bias in favor of the homosexual agenda?" and "Should homosexuals be given the same special rights extended to African-Americans and other minorities?"), but I do think that we can make a point and show them that not every American - or every everyday American - thinks that minorities are some how less-than or worth less and the civil rights are not "special rights."

PS. I clearly got off the mailing list at some point because no one has been mailing me the updates in the homosexual agenda. We control the media? Did you guys boot me because I'm pansexual? Is that it? You don't want to share as you take over the world?

The thing is, these people feel genuinely silenced. I'm always grappling with this problem because the obvious answer is "uhm... what are you on? No you're not." They really do believe minorities are getting special rights. They really do feel threatened. And there just doesn't seem to be a way to show them that they're not without steamrolling over the entitlement and, well, justifying their whining.

Like in some places that documentary's been taken off the air for being hate speech, so the group thinks "see, the gays really ARE trying to silence us." It's like dealing with a paranoid schizophrenic who can't be medicated-- you can't reason with them.

I think that's the thing that makes these people so terrifying - you cannot reason with them. They think that when they are told that they are being hateful, they are being persecuted.

The language on their website demonstrates this. I'll just grab some stuff from the "Homosexual Agenda" page and the subsection on why people should oppose same-sex marriage: "Marriage among homosexuals will spread throughout the world, just as pornography did after the Nixon Commission declared obscene material "beneficial" to mankind.11 Almost instantly, the English-speaking countries liberalized their laws against smut. America continues to be the fountainhead of filth and immorality, and its influence is global." and "That responsibility to teach the next generation will never recover from the loss of committed, God-fearing families. The younger generation and those yet to come will be deprived of the Good News, as has already occurred in France, Germany and other European countries. Instead of providing for a father and mother, the advent of homosexual marriage will create millions of motherless children and fatherless kids. This is morally wrong, and is condemned in Scripture. Are we now going to join the Netherlands and Belgium to become the third country in the history of the world to "normalize" and legalize behavior that has been prohibited by God himself? Heaven help us if we do!" and "The culture war will be over, and I fear, the world may soon become "as it was in the days of Noah" (Matthew 24:37, NIV). This is the climactic moment in the battle to preserve the family, and future generations hang in the balance."

tl;dr: Same-sex marriage = children with fathers or mothers and quite possible the apocalypse

While I'd love to point out that there are thousands of children being raised in these here United States in families with single gender parent (ie single parent homes), I don't think they'd care. I'd love to point out that plenty of queers are Christians (and that its people like this that often drive them from the faith). I'd love to point out that neither Norway nor Belgium, despite what they're saying, has been smited by God. However, no one would care.

(I would also love to set them up with some Classicists who could explain in detail that homosexuality did not lead to the fall of the Roman Empire and it was quite possibly Christianity that did that.)

That's what makes them both terrifying and powerful. If we try to afford them the respect we desire for ourselves - allow them to speak their turn - we are steamrolled. If we do not, we are persecuting them.

So, I fill out their form. I let them know that not everyone agrees with their hatred.

When I move out, I will probably write letters to groups such as these and explain to them how they drove me from Christianity with hatred in a religion that claims to be about love (my mother subscribes to these beliefs and, indeed, owns many books advertised on the AFA website). Do I think it will make a difference? No. But maybe in somebody's life, somewhere.
