Can I pop in? In "In the Beginning" when Dean breaks into Daniel's house for the gun, Elkins of course wants to rip him a new one. But Dean says "I can save my family" and magically all is well. I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time it happened but my sinuses are killing me beyond remembering now... So, I think that for a vast majority of hunters "family" is a magical word. For Bobby it was his wife, for Tamara and her husband it was their kid, for Gordon his sister... they all went into this life because of "family". And I think that word now carries a way bigger meaning for them than we can really understand. Would Bobby have died to save his wife? Looking at it from today's perspective, he'd probably say HELL YEAH! All of them. So when they see Sam and Dean, who have each other, they can only feel a tinge of jealousy and a whole lot of understanding. Maybe.
