I believe you're right about Romantic Lit. Didn't the Gothic come directly out of the Romantic? Or was possibly a sub-genre of the Romantic? It's kind of sad, I really ought to know the answer to that myself, lol. I'm not terribly familiar with the Gothic, but I did just complete a course in it last semester, so I should know... Shows how well I paid attention in that one, huh?

it doesn't appear to be a forbidden thing that will one day come to light and rain horror upon them
I've gotta say, I'm not entirely sure this is true. On the surface, it doesn't appear this way, and I certainly don't think it will necessarily be approached like incestuous themes in the Gothic, but at the same time, you do have people like the Trickster, and Dean himself, pointing out exactly how dangerous their emotional connection is. It's true, of course, that this is the only thing that's kept them alive thus far, but there are multiple hints of danger in it, that I imagine may likely come to light one day, and that could likely destroy the both of them.

Feel free to quote me, if you like. (I'm blushing that you might want to use this for a paper.)
Thanks! It's very likely I will. You make a great argument, and I imagine it could be pretty helpful in my research methods paper, which is going to focus on the representations of the family relationships in Supernatural... And you may even find your way into my masters thesis... :)
