Flist, I turn to you.

For my Serial Killer Class, I must read or watch a piece of modern serial killer literature we don't read in class (this would be most - we're covering M, Psycho, Zombie, American Psycho, Last House on the Left, a Poppy Z Brite novel, etc). I'm more into the werewolves, vampires, and ghosts end of horror. So, friends, what would you suggest I read/watch?

(Apparently cannibalism counts and I suspect comics would be fine.)

Psycho will never not scare me.

From Hell! (The comic preferably, but the movie if you must)

Behind the Mask: The Rise and Fall of Leslie Vernon. Much more than any of those other movies (though I do love Seven). it's a mockumentary of 3 filmmakers following a serial killer, but then they try to stop him once they realize how legit it all is. It's a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally good movie. Like I can't emphasize how good. And I highly highly highly suggest it be for your choice.

I assume you're covering Thomas Harris - who did Silence of the Lambs? If not, I would absolutely recommend the works of Thomas Harris; who is a superior novelist, as well as a great example of serial killer studies.

Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (I think, I always eff up their names-- the guys that wrote Relic). I don't know why it sticks out in my head the way it does, it's possibly for the vague fantasy quality where you think the killer really could achieve immortality like he thinks he can.

Might not be up your alley/might be too fluffy, but.

The Summer of Sam?

no werewolves, etc, but there's two movies that are both serial killer movies and meta commentary on media presentations of serial killers:

Natural Born Killers (Oliver Stone)

Man Bites Dog (Remy Belvaux) - belgian film. (I haven't seen this since it was in the theaters, but I recommend it).

Does it have to be a movie? Because Dexter on Showtime is about a serial killer who works for the Miami PD in forensics. It's from the serial killer's pov.
